About Helen

Helen Naomi Hawthorne was born on July 11, 1927, in Mexia, Texas, to the late Leola Taulton (Tatum) and Willie Hobbs. She pursued her early education in her local school system and briefly attended Prairie View A&M University, where she began to nurture her passion for learning and self-improvement. Helen accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age and was a devoted member of Beth Eden Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, for over 50 years.

Helen was united in marriage to Robert Hawthorne in Dallas, Texas, a loving union blessed with four children. She was a woman of many passions, enjoying art, fashion, cooking, and hosting gatherings for family and friends. Helen also loved casino trips and cherished every moment spent with her loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Hawthorne; her parents, Leola and Willie; her daughter, Doris Hawthorne; her grandchildren, Lisa and Derrick Hawthorne; and her siblings, Willie Tatum, Ester Ringer, Ada Hart, Charles Hobbs, Willie Hobbs Jr., and John D. Hobbs.

Helen leaves behind to cherish her memory her children: Sharon Hawthorne, Anetra Hawthorne Polk, and Robert Hawthorne; her siblings: Gloria Brown, Cornelia Wells, Lacy Hobbs, and Erwin Hobbs; grandchildren: Tenesha Armstead (Ca’mar), Adrian McClendon (Kendall), Brittany Washington, Stephen Hawthorne-Hill, Kourtney Hawthorne, and Korey Hawthorne; great-grandchildren: Kimberly Hawthorne, Preston Wamsley, Jaiden Green, Rayshawn Wamsley, Josiah Green, Kayson Hawthorne, Ca’Mya Wamsley, Warren McClendon, and Ja’Zarra Armstead; and great-great-grandchildren: Kyndell Chavers and Kynsley Hawthorne. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
